We believe the best ideas come from relationships that cherish innovation, from passion that seeks to understand where we are going and not just where we are, from notes scribbled on napkins and not just strategic plans. The College of Law Practice Management.

Dues Reminder

If you have not paid your 2007 Fellow dues, please do so by March 31.

What's new?

You tell us!  Have you changed jobs, received an honor, written a book. . . . let us know so we can include the information in next quarter's newsletter.  Has your firm just completed some proprietary research, changed locations, launched a new practice. . . .let us - and the Fellows know!  Have you recently retired, retooled, opened a new office or changed firms and you're looking for advice and counsel from those who went before?  Send us a note for distribution to the other Fellows.  They are, you know, the cream of the law practice management crop.

Fellow Profile

Andrew Z. Adkins

How did you get started in the legal profession?

I'm actually an electronics engineer; I have a BS and an ME degree and I worked as an engineer in industry for seven years. My father was a lawyer in Gainesville FL for 36 years and my uncle, James C. Adkins, was a Florida Supreme Court Justice. When I started consulting with lawyers in 1989, the name "Adkins" had a good reputation and it helped me open alot of doors. Of course, neither my father nor my uncle used computers, so the rest was left up to me. More

Remembrances

Robert B. Yegge

By Jack Hanley

On December 16th, friends, colleagues, students and the entire legal profession lost a legend.  Robert B. Yegge, Dean Emeritus of the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, died of respiratory failure at a Denver, Colorado hospice.

Bob Yegge was born June 17, 1934 and, despite the handicap of having a lawyer for a father, went on to set his own gold standard as a lawyer, law professor and dean.  At the tender age of 14, while a student in Junior High, he began hosting a Saturday morning radio show called "Teen Scenes," which featured contemporary music by well-known artists of the day. In Memoriam

John Conner, an early practice management pioneer, passed away in December.  John practiced law for more than thirty years in Washington, D.C., and was most recently a partner at the law firm of McKenna, Long & Aldridge, LLP.  As third Chairman of the Committee on Economics of Law Practice of the American Bar Association, he actively promoted and participated in early national conferences on law office economics and management.  He helped kindle the national spark of interest in law practice management.  His paper, Elements of Proper Timekeeping, given at the Third National Conference on Law Office Economics and Management in 1968, is a classic.  He implanted his notions on effective management into his law firm which ultimately expanded into a firm of national recognition.  John was inducted as a Honorary Fellow in the College in 1994.

All eyes on Philadelphia – September 7 & 8!

If your calendar isn’t marked . . . .then mark it right now.  The Annual Meeting and Induction Dinner is scheduled for the Four Seasons in Philadelphia on September 7 and 8 of this year.  You’ll want to be there for the induction of this year’s class of Fellows, but we also anticipate this will be one of our biggest years for attendance.  You’ll see old friends, make new ones and share your wisdom in formal and informal discussion groups.  Mary Beth Pratt, 2007 Program Chair, is putting together a great couple of days.  If you have thoughts, questions, suggestions for the program, just give her a shout at mbpratt@mbprattconsulting.com.  Or contact Karen Rosen at College headquarters.
